We are proud to congratulate Johannes Oesterreicher on successfully defending his PhD thesis “Engineering Extracellular Vesicles: Reducing Thrombogenicity and Targeting the Lymphatic Vasculature” at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). Johannes is the first doctoral graduate to emerge from the NanoPrecMed consortium – a moment that brings shared pride across the whole team.
Johannes has been a valued member of LBI Trauma’s EV community for years. From his Bachelor and Master studies all the way to this PhD he was mentored by Wolfgang Holnthoner, who is all the more proud to see the success of his student. Known for his calm and reliable manner and his unmistakably Austrian sense of humor, Johannes built strong connections within the institute. The number of colleagues who came to support him during his defense speaks for itself.
In the latter part of his PhD, Johannes became an active contributor to NanoPrecMed’s public engagement efforts, helping to promote broader understanding of extracellular vesicles and presenting at our OpenLab workshop series. He also played a role in the wider EV research community through his involvement with ASEV (Austrian Society for Extracellular Vesicles) and ISEV (International Society for Extracellular Vesicles).
Johannes’ scientific work received early recognition: at the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration, he was awarded the Young Investigator Award for a project that addressed one of the field’s major safety challenges. Using CRISPR/Cas9, Johannes developed a stromal cell line for EV production that eliminates thrombogenic risk.
The entire NanoPrecMed consortium thanks Johannes for his contributions to science and science communication and wishes him all the best for the next steps in his career.
